COMMUNITY SPORT NOVICE COACH MANDATE & TRAINING

In an initiative to strengthen grassroots football across the country, Football Canada approved the Community Sport Novice Coach Mandate.

As per the mandate, all coaches, regardless of specialization (contact or non-contact) must be community coach trained by 2021 if they are instructing athletes under the age of 14.

For the training itself, coaches must complete their education following the Community Sports Pathway, which focuses on making ethical decisions, fundamental movement skills, practice planning, communication skills and enhancing safety. This is done with both online and classroom sessions.

The mandated implementation is as follows:

1. 2019: All Head Coaches and 50% of the staff must be Community Coach Trained

2. 2020: All Head Coaches and 75% of the Staff must be Community Coach Trained

3. 2021: All Coaches coaching athletes under the age of 14 must be community sport trained.

Given the late notice: The BCPFA is hoping we can achieve the 2019 goal across the province. The 2020 mandate statement will stay in place.

In order to facilitate training of coaches, the BCPFA will hold Learning Facilitator sessions for all member club Coach Coordinators and an alternate. Subsequently, those Coach Coordinators (or alternate) will be able to train the coaches within their organization.

These sessions will be at no cost to members.

The first two Community Sport Novice Coach Learning Facilitator training sessions will take place:

March 2 – 11 am to 5 pm Kamloops Sports Council Office 1550 Island Pkwy, Kamloops (MacArthur Island)

March 9 – 11 am to 5 pm Justice Institute of BC 715 McBride Blvd, New Westminster
